Buckley's Jack and Jill children's formula
Buckley’s® Jack & Jill® wants to make you aware of a new Health Canada announcement on children’s cough and cold medicines.

On December 18, 2008 Health Canada made the following announcement: Over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medicines with certain active ingredients are being relabelled to say “Do not give to children under 6” in time for the Fall 2009 cough and cold season.

Health Canada has indicated that cough and cold products can continue to be used to relieve symptoms in children age six and over. Buckley’s® Jack & Jill® has been providing safe and effective relief of children’s cough and cold symptoms, when used as directed, for decades.

You can continue to trust and rely on these medicines for your children age six and older.

We will re-label Buckley’s® Jack & Jill® products to clearly reflect the new directions once the Health Canada Labeling Standard is finalized and products with the new labelling and packaging will transition onto store shelves as soon as possible, in line with Health Canada’s required timing.

In the meantime, products on store shelves will still have dosing information for children under age six.

Reports of serious adverse events related to children’s cough and cold medicines are quite rare. Adverse events occur mostly in younger children who have accidentally ingested these medicines or have been given an incorrect dose by their parent or caregiver.

Therefore it is important to follow these guidelines when giving cough cold products to your children:
  • Do not give oral over-the-counter cough and cold medicines to children under the age of six
  • Always give the recommended dose and use a proper measuring device
  • Never exceed the single and maximum daily dosage and duration of use
  • Never give your child more than one medicine at the same time unless directed by a healthcare professional
  • Never use these medicines to make your child sleepy
  • Never give adult-strength medicine to a child
  • Only use the medicine that treats your child’s specific symptoms
  • Stop use and call your doctor about any signs or symptoms that concern you
  • Keep all medicines out of your child’s reach and sight
  • Consult a doctor, pharmacists, or other healthcare provider with any questions
